Consulting Services of the Design and Expansion of Prince Sultan Ben Abdel Aziz Airport in Tabuk

Saudi Arabia

The high growth in passenger numbers experienced by the airport in recent years and expected to continue in the future, is predicted to exceed current capacity. The objective was to consider a global expansion of the airport facilities including accesses, passenger terminal, apron, airfield, administration building, cargo terminal, together with a number of smaller infrastructure improvements.

The scope of works commenced with the development of the new airport Masterplan, and then went on to develop the options design and then progressed to the detailed design of the preferred option.

The Masterplan predicts the short and long-term expansion needs of the airport, with a detailed analysis of capacity, and proposes a phase development that is driven by demand.

One of the principal improvements is the expansion of the passenger terminal providing a surface area that almost doubles that of the existing. The expansion helped to minimise the energy use, working mainly in the façade, with new, more efficient systems so that the sustainability of all the set was increased.
In providing this increase in scale the project seeks to enhance the visual communication between the different parts of the building, both horizontally and vertically, so that the increase, but in a recognition and enhancement of its unique elements: the entrance atrium, the roof and the facade.
