IDOM wins Building of the Year 2026 with Claro Arena
The modernization project for the Universidad Católica stadium in Santiago de Chile has been awarded the ArchDaily Building of the Year 2026 in the Sports Architecture category. This is one of the most influential international recognitions in the architectural sector.
The new Claro Arena, designed by IDOM, transforms the historic San Carlos de Apoquindo stadium into a contemporary, sustainable venue prepared to host activity 7/365. The project expands capacity from 12,000 to 20,000 spectators, enhances the user experience, and positions Club Universidad Católica at the forefront of sports infrastructure in the region.
The design preserves the original stands, integrating them into a two-level architectural system: a 360-degree perimeter boulevard that organizes access and circulation, and a light, permeable upper extension that rises above the existing structure. The rectangular geometry optimizes both views and functionality, while the corners become distinctive spaces featuring multipurpose rooms and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Sustainability is a fundamental pillar of the project. The original concrete structure is fully reused, materials from demolition are recycled, and a significant volume of Chilean laminated timber, 1,600 m³, is incorporated, capturing more than 1,500 tons of CO₂. In addition, the timber–slat façade and mixed steel-and-wood roof improve environmental comfort and reduce energy consumption.
This recognition reinforces IDOM’s commitment to responsible, efficient, and environmentally respectful design, and strengthens the firm’s track record in sports infrastructure at an international scale.
