Design and implementation of the contactless BARIK card in Bizkaia

After designing the interoperable contactless card “Barik”, IDOM has assisted CTB in the upgrading of all the public transport ticketing systems of Biscay province to deploy the Barik card

The design and implementation of the contactless BARIK card in Bizkaia, carried out by IDOM, marks a milestone in the modernization and integration of the province’s public transport system. Following the comprehensive definition of the system, IDOM assisted CTB in deploying this technology across all modes of transport: metro, tram, railways, urban and interurban buses, and other complementary services.

The BARIK card, based on state-of-the-art contactless technology, allows users to access all transport modes quickly and securely, with efficient and fast validation processes. The system is managed centrally and online, ensuring real-time coordination, travel record management, advanced security policies, and fare clearing between operators.

Thanks to IDOM’s involvement, full interoperability between various operators has been achieved, facilitating mobility and enhancing the user experience, while optimizing control and settlement processes. This system has become a technological benchmark in Spain and contributes significantly to the integration and sustainability of public transport in Bizkaia.
