WWTP technical assistance in Galicia: urban wastewater treatment optimization

Spain

The WWTP technical assistance provided by IDOM in Galicia is essential to ensure the efficient and sustainable management of urban wastewater treatment plants. Augas de Galicia is responsible for the operational management of 30 urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) serving a total equivalent population of 839,968 inhabitants distributed throughout the Autonomous Community of Galicia, primarily—though not exclusively—in coastal towns (Pontevedra, Cambados, Baiona, Ribadeo, Tui, etc.).

Operation encompasses responsibility for all technical and administrative matters involved in managing a wastewater treatment plant. The River Basin Authority contracted IDOM to provide technical assistance aimed at continuous monitoring of all operational variables of the WWTP, including compliance with discharge parameters, proper technical maintenance of the facilities, and financial control of operations.

IDOM has developed and implemented a methodology for the monitoring and control of the treatment plants, which includes the following activities:

  • Sampling and periodic characterization of discharges and other streams involved in the treatment process.
  • Design of analytical and flow monitoring campaigns for specific situations.
  • Regular technical visits.
  • Supervision visits for special or relevant actions.
  • Initial, monthly, annual, incident, and specific reports.
  • Standardization of preventive maintenance actions.
  • Proposal and assessment of technical improvements for the plants.
  • Assistance in the preparation of operating specifications.
  • Preparation of procedures.
  • Study of operational costs.
