IDOM, a driving force for innovation in SMEs through the Hazinnova program

The Basque Country’s placement in the 2023 Regional Innovation Scoreboard (RIS) as a “high innovation” region, maintaining its “pole of excellence” status and surpassing the European average by nearly 10 points, is the outcome of a robust strategy. This strategy emphasizes innovation within SMEs, a sector to which IDOM has made significant contributions.

SMEs in the Basque Country represent much more than a simple statistic; they are the agile, specialized component that sustains the industry’s competitiveness. Their proximity to customers, capacity for adaptation and innovation, and technical knowledge make them key players in complex, highly demanding value chains.

Every improvement they implement – whether related to operational efficiency, product design, or access to new markets -generates a multiplier effect. It boosts employment, stimulates investment, and reinforces the resilience of the industrial ecosystem. Therefore, when an SME innovates, it triggers a transformation that extends throughout the entire region.

From the IDOM area of competitiveness and innovation, we contribute our knowledge to the design and operation of innovative projects and solutions related to the optimization of internal processes, as well as innovative practices around decarbonization and the circular economy. We have worked with nearly 300 SMEs in sectors such as machine tools, metal, naval, distribution, logistics, health, and mobility.
