La Nueva Romareda, an example of sustainability and architecture recognized with the BREEAM award
La Nueva Romareda stadium, designed by IDOM, wins the prestigious BREEAM certification (BREEAM Award) for its excellence in sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental responsibility. To date, nearly 97% of total waste has been recovered, preventing almost 49,000 tons from ending up in landfills. Additionally, 9,000 seats have been reused by other regional clubs, promoting a second life for these resources. The stadium won the BREEAM ES New Construction category at the second BREEAM ES Awards.
This award establishes the project as a European benchmark in responsible sports architecture.
Designed as a potential venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the stadium blends into Zaragoza’s urban fabric, interacts with its natural surroundings, and provides a unique experience for spectators and citizens.
Work is progressing well: demolition is complete, construction of the elevated stands in the South Goal area is underway, and foundations are being laid in several areas. Over 100 people are involved in the construction of this new urban icon.
