Bizkaibizi 2.0 is here, thanks to IDOM: technology and innovation at the service of a more connected Bizkaia
With Bizkaibizi 2.0, mobility in Bizkaia is becoming more technological, sustainable, and people-centered. The new regional public electric bicycle loan service will give people in the territory’s 113 municipalities a real alternative to private vehicles. This will encourage people to use more than one mode of transportation and reduce the environmental impact.
For this project, IDOM is working with the Provincial Council of Bizkaia / Bizkaiko Foru Aldundia to create a plan for the system. IDOM is also helping to define the service model, calculate the technical and economic costs, organize the bidding process, and evaluate the bids.
The system will combine different service models that are adapted to local needs:
- Short distance in 38 municipalities.
- Long distance in 75 municipalities, with intermodal points in regional capitals and public transport hubs.
- A specific system on the Leioa campus of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), with 44 electric bicycles and six cycle parks.
For sizing, proprietary Transport Planning Tool software was used, which made it possible to identify usage patterns, optimize station locations, and ensure the operational and economic viability of the system.
The Telecommunications Department is working with the Mobility group on Bizkaibizi 2.0. This project shows how technology and new ideas can change public transportation, making life better and helping the environment in the area.
