Catholic University Stadium: a global project built with local technology and resources
At IDOM, we are celebrating the opening of the Claro Arena, the new stadium of the Catholic University of Chile, which has undergone a profound architectural and structural transformation.
This project ushers in a new era for the historic San Carlos de Apoquindo Stadium, showcasing the integration of local solutions with global innovation. The stadium’s envelope and roof were made with laminated Chilean radiata pine wood from CMPC-managed forests. CMPC plants, cares for, and cuts trees for use in construction, ensuring a sustainable cycle. Additionally, manufacturing and assembly were carried out using a locally developed system and local labor, further reinforcing the project’s positive impact on the regional economy.
Architecture for the future of sport
With a capacity of more than 20,000 spectators, the new Claro Arena redefines the experience for athletes and visitors with a design that combines technological innovation, comfort, and respect for history.
The original stands remain almost intact and are integrated into a light and permeable structure that expands the arena’s capacity without altering its essence. A perimeter boulevard connects all areas of the stadium. The corners have been transformed into multipurpose spaces offering views of the landscape and the field. These spaces can be used for matches, as well as cultural and corporate events.
The use of Chilean laminated wood provides warmth, lightness, and sustainability. Vertical slats, together with LED lighting and natural ventilation, ensure optimal environmental comfort.
Sustainability, efficiency, & circularity
The project sets a new standard for the application of the circular economy to sports architecture. The existing concrete structure was reused and 1,600 m³ of laminated wood was incorporated, capturing more than 1,500 tons of CO₂. Materials such as steel from the old roof and plastic from the seats were recycled.
Collaboration with local partners was essential. Chilean companies in the steel, wood, plastic, and energy sectors made this project, which is committed to responsible innovation and regional development, possible.
A milestone for the city and for IDOM
The Claro Arena is not only home to the Cruzados soccer team and is a top-level stadium, but it is also a new meeting place for Santiago. It is equipped to host shows, events, and civic activities throughout the year.
For IDOM, this project reaffirms our belief that architecture can be sustainable, efficient, and emotional. It has the power to transform a sports venue into a true urban space.
