The Lithium Center project in Mexico is a strategic leap towards clean energy
Did you know that lithium is considered the “white gold” of the energy transition?
As the world moves toward clean technologies and electric mobility, Mexico is preparing to take a strategic leap forward with the design of the first Lithium Research Center. The center aims to establish Mexico as a regional leader in energy storage innovation and sustainable development.
To bring this vision to fruition, IDOM provided specialized consulting services. These services were aimed at defining the strategic and technical elements that would shape a sustainable, inclusive center focused on lithium storage applications and technologies.
The project included a pre-feasibility study analyzing the technical, economic, and strategic viability of the center, taking into account global trends and best practices. As countries in the “Lithium Triangle”—Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile—already have advanced centers, there is an urgent need for Mexico to strengthen its own capabilities and actively participate in the value chain of this key resource for the energy transition.
The Center’s main objectives include:
- Promoting applied research and the development of patentable technologies.
- Training specialized talent and consolidating a collaborative ecosystem between government, academia, industry, and society.
- Strengthening national technological and energy sovereignty.
The Center is designed to be a hub for innovation and sustainable development, bringing together the science, technology, and innovation (STI) ecosystem focused on lithium. The pre-feasibility study marks the beginning of this ambitious vision: reducing dependence on imports, generating specialized knowledge, and positioning Mexico as a regional leader in the mineral value chain to promote competitiveness, industrial development, and sustainability.
