Comprehensive management for the soil quality declaration at a historic industrial site
Spain
Since 2013, the sustainable soil management business line of the Environment area has been working on various processes to obtain the Soil Quality Declaration for a site that underwent intense industrial activity (metallurgy and energy) for over a century.
The projects carried out have required IDOM’s work in the following areas:
- Waste inventories and supervision: preparation of waste inventories and supervision of their management. These tasks include drafting a detailed report that documents the quantification and classification of the waste stored in a disused building. Once the waste management process begins, follow‑up and control activities are carried out to ensure the correct handling of all inventoried elements.
- Waste characterization sheets: preparation of waste characterization sheets, including sample collection and material analysis to determine their properties and ensure proper classification.
- Selective demolition project: development of a project aimed at defining the scope of selective demolition activities. Selective demolition consists of performing gradual and coordinated operations designed to maximize the reuse of demolition materials while minimizing the fraction sent to landfill.
- Preliminary and exploratory soil quality investigation: execution of exploratory investigations to identify the presence of potential contaminant substances at the site. The objective is to determine whether the soil or associated groundwater may be altered or contaminated.
The property is currently in the process of obtaining the necessary licences from the authorities to demolish practically all of the existing buildings.
