Working to obtain the soil and groundwater quality declaration
Spain
In 2023, following the closure of a major metal structure construction company, the Sustainable Soil Management business line of the Environment Department worked on various processes to obtain the Soil Quality Declaration.
The projects carried out have required IDOM’s work in the following areas:
- Waste inventories and supervision of waste management. This work is based on the preparation of a report detailing the accounting and classification of waste stored in a disused building. Subsequently, when the waste is managed, it is monitored and controlled to ensure the correct management of the items inventoried.
- Demolition project and technical assistance for the demolitions carried out. The aim of the project is to define the scope of the work associated with selective demolition. The selective demolition project aims to define the set of operations carried out in a gradual and coordinated manner to promote the maximum use of the materials that constitute demolition waste, thus minimising the fraction sent to landfill. The main objective of supervising the demolition work was to control the correct management of the waste generated in the process.
- Soil quality investigations. The main objective of the investigations was to check whether there are concentrations of pollutants at the site that could mean that the soil and associated groundwater are altered or contaminated.
- Excavation plan. The excavation plans include the characterisation of the materials to be excavated through sampling and analysis for future management or reuse on site. Subsequently, during excavation, the work is supervised to ensure the correct management or reuse of the materials.
The property is currently in the process of obtaining the relevant excavation authorisation for the construction project from the authorities.
