IDOM collaborates on Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia
Construction works on the temple, one of the great architectural milestones of the century, advance with the completion of the Tower of Jesus
Barcelona has witnessed a historic moment: the placement of the upper arm of the cross crowning the Tower of Jesus Christ, the tallest element of the complex and the culmination of Antoni Gaudí’s most iconic architectural project. With this operation, the Sagrada Familia reaches a height of 172.5 meters above sea level, becoming the tallest church in the world and permanently transforming the city’s skyline.
The operation, carried out on Friday, 20 February 2026, completed the exterior construction of the central tower and marked a new chapter in a building process that has required highly specialised logistics, involving high-capacity cranes and technical teams working at heights exceeding 170 metres.
Since 2024, IDOM has been supporting the Sagrada Familia Construction Board in the planning and monitoring of key project milestones, including the completion of the Tower of Jesus and the upcoming inauguration scheduled for 10 June 2026, coinciding with the centenary of Gaudí’s death.
The cross, measuring 17 meters in height and 13.5 meters in width, is made of glazed white ceramic and glass, in keeping with Gaudí’s original vision: to create an element that would shine during the day, reflecting light across the entire city. The upper arm of the cross will also house the Agnus Dei, a work by artist Andrea Mastrovito, faithfully executed in accordance with the original drawings preserved by the Modernist architect.
While this milestone does not mark the end of the project, it represents one of its most anticipated moments. The Sagrada Familia continues its path towards full completion, with outstanding works still to be carried out, including the monumental Fachada de la Gloria, several exterior sculptural groups, and the completion of some of the Apostolic Towers.
For IDOM, being part of this process both an extraordinary responsibility and an honor.
