IDOM is participating in one of the key railway infrastructure projects in the Basque Country

ADIF Alta Velocidad awarded IDOM the contract to draft the study of alternatives and the basic design and construction projects for the track assembly base and storage areas of the Basque Country High-Speed Line (LAV) on the Vitoria–Bilbao section, including the Bergara railway junction.

This project is essential for developing the Y vasca (Basque Y), a high-speed rail axis that will connect Vitoria/Gasteiz, Bilbao, and San Sebastián/Donostia. It will also link up with the French border and the Lisbon–Strasbourg Atlantic Corridor within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

The highly complex route has a high number of tunnels and viaducts and has been designed with double track in international gauge for mixed passenger and freight traffic.

Assembly and site logistics base

The project includes designing a track assembly base to provide support during construction and maintenance of the line. The project also includes the creation of intermediate material storage areas along the route to optimize logistics and ensure the continuity of work.

The base will include:

  • Railway track storage and transfer areas.
  • Railway turnout pre-assembly areas.
  • Infrastructure and rolling stock maintenance workshops.
  • Office buildings, warehouses, and specialized road accesses.

The design is planned in two phases: a temporary phase and a permanent phase. The design focuses on operational efficiencytechnical feasibility, and sustainability.

Through this project, IDOM further establishes its expertise in designing high-speed rail infrastructure, thereby contributing to the modernization of the rail system and integrating the Basque Country into major European corridors.
