FIFA visits La Romareda: IDOM presents the progress of the future Zaragoza stadium, proposed as a host venue for the 2030 World Cup
Yesterday, a FIFA delegation visited Zaragoza as part of its tour to evaluate potential venues for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The agenda included a technical session and a visit to the construction site. César Azcárate, IDOM’s chief architect who is leading the design and management of Zaragoza’s new stadium, presented La Romareda and then participated in a question-and-answer session with the institutional and technical teams involved.
Azcárate presented the status of the work and the design’s key elements: a 43,110-spectator stadium designed to offer the best fan experience and become an urban and sustainable benchmark. The envelope and roof, modeled after the Cierzo wind, provide 100% protection for the stands and create a 360° walkway with views of the city and countryside. The stadium has BREEAM Excellent certification and won the BREEAM ES New Construction category at the second edition of the BREEAM ES Awards.
The main objective of this visit was to analyze compliance with the requirements for hosting the event, as well as to certify the progress in the construction and design of the new soccer stadium, which is set to be an architectural and technological example at the national level.
The day also addressed other aspects such as organizational capacity, intermobility and transportation, auxiliary and complementary infrastructures, accommodation and hotel capacity, the preparation of distinctive spaces, environmental sustainability, city commitments, and binding guarantees for the venue.
The new stadium will serve as a city facility for sports and cultural events, with integrated tertiary uses that will promote activity 365 days a year and a new urban hub in the area around Eduardo Ibarra and the Isabel la Católica promenade.
