Innovation and sustainability to transform the grain supply chain
The new Cereal Innovation Center, developed by ESPIGA R&D, is a one-of-a-kind facility in Europe. It brings together the entire cereal processing chain in a single space, from experimental milling to developing final products and training specialists.
The compact and functional building is organized around a central landscaped courtyard that provides natural light, cross-ventilation, and a constant connection to nature. The building’s understated white exterior reflects the concepts of technical precision and food safety.
The ground floor contains the applied research areas and technical workshops, and the first floor has laboratories, offices, and collaborative spaces. The building incorporates green roofs, solar shading louvers, thermal insulation, and VRF air-source heat pump systems to ensure high energy efficiency and a reduced environmental footprint.
According to the Government of Navarra, the center was established with two objectives: incorporating sustainable solutions throughout the entire cereal supply chain and training professionals capable of driving innovation in the agri-food sector. This infrastructure addresses the growing social demand for healthier, more sustainable, and technologically advanced foods.
The Cereal Innovation Center’s multidisciplinary approach will facilitate the development of new products, the improvement of processes, the promotion of more efficient cereal varieties, and the strengthening of the competitiveness of Navarre’s industrial sector.
