We presented the European Investment Bank’s North Kirchberg building
A few days ago, Armando Bilbao, Director of the Building Engineering Division, presented the North Kirchberg building of the European Investment Bank (EIB) in Luxembourg at the Council on Vertical Urbanism Europe conference in Madrid.
The project, which is currently under construction, aims to redefine the workplace with its highly sustainable and forward-looking design. “This is a highly complex development for a very demanding client with particularly ambitious sustainability, energy efficiency, low consumption and flexibility of use standards, which presented the challenge of meeting all these requirements while maintaining design coherence and constructability,” Armando commented.
The structural uniqueness of the large, cantilevered volume over the plaza is noteworthy. This was achieved through a hybrid structure of metal trusses and composite slabs, which was designed to precisely control deformations, vibrations, and long-term performance. ‘Added to this is a high-performance façade that integrates architectural, energy, and constructability requirements, combining technical quality with industrialised solutions that optimise execution and user comfort,’ he added.
The project reflects IDOM’s approach to complex buildings: close collaboration across disciplines; a philosophy of comprehensive building design; and decision-making guided by 5D BIM from the earliest phases. Sustainability is a strategic objective, with a strong focus on performance, durability, and long-term value.
IDOM carried out the final design and produced the fully coordinated construction drawings. We are also responsible for the technical supervision of the main works, engineering functions, in accordance with the FIDIC contract and PM.
