Technical solutions to strengthen the rail link between Poland and Ukraine
IDOM is conducting a feasibility study for the modernization of two strategic railway lines in Poland, the Lublin-Polish-Ukrainian border line and the Chełm-Polish-Ukrainian border line, for the national operator, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A.
The project is part of an effort to improve rail connectivity with Ukraine and covers approximately 130 kilometers (80.77 miles) of track, including 100 kilometers (62.14 miles) of standard gauge (1,435 mm) and 30 kilometers (18.64 miles) of broad gauge (1,520 mm). This introduces significant technical constraints in the design of the solutions.
IDOM is defining route alternatives that will enable operating speeds of 160–200 km/h on the Lublin line and 100–120 km/h on the Chełm line while considering the unique characteristics of each corridor.
The scope also includes developing proposals for the border crossing area with Ukraine. This area is particularly complex from technical and operational standpoints and is key to ensuring the continuity of rail traffic and logistical efficiency.
To date, the client has approved two phases of the study, which correspond to the initial technical developments. Currently, work is focused on preparing detailed technical analyses to define the final solutions.
The feasibility study is scheduled for completion in early 2027.
