JOTUN Yanbu project enters a new phase with the start of demolition works
IDOM is supporting JOTUN, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of paints and coatings, as its project in Yanbu Industrial City (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) has reached a significant milestone, with demolition work commencing in July. This milestone marks the transition from engineering and permitting activities into the first on‑site execution phase.
The project involves the demolition of an existing finished goods warehouse within JOTUN’s industrial facilities and the construction of a new solvent-based paint factory. The new facility in Yanbu is designed with sufficient manufacturing and filling capacity to fully meet the forecast demand providing robust operational flexibility across all product categories and aligning with JOTUN’s long‑term manufacturing strategy in the region. For IDOM, this project represents a significant opportunity to collaborate with a key international client in the coatings sector, further strengthening a relationship built on technical alignment, trust and shared objectives.
IDOM has already completed the basic engineering, successfully integrating the process technology developed bya reputed process design consultant from France, and ensuring full alignment between process requirements, layout, utilities and safety concepts. In parallel, IDOM continues to support JOTUN throughout the required environmental, demolition and construction permitting processes, working closely with local authorities and stakeholders.
The project is currently in the detailed engineering phase, establishing the technical foundation required to safely initiate site activities and prepare for the upcoming construction works. A key success factor has been the close collaboration between IDOM’s Manufacturing – Chemical Business Line, the Environment technical area, and IDOM’s local team in KSA, ensuring that all regulatory requirements are fully embedded in both engineering and permitting strategies from the very earliest stages of the project.
This assignment reflects the complexity of multicultural and geographically distributed projects, requiring close coordination between European and local teams, JOTUN’s international and regional organizations, technology providers and authorities. It combines IDOM’s strong expertise in chemical manufacturing facilities with in‑depth knowledge of local regulations and administrative frameworks in Saudi Arabia.
The start of demolition works opens a new phase of collaboration on site, with IDOM expected to initiate construction management services before the end of the year, further extending its involvement across the full project lifecycle.
Beyond this specific milestone, the project strengthens IDOM’s presence in the Middle East and reinforces Manufacturing as a strategic technical area for the region. Most importantly, it consolidates the collaboration with JOTUN, a client with whom IDOM looks forward to continuing to build a long‑term relationship beyond this individual project, supporting future industrial developments in the coatings segment.
