On track for the future: IDOM to advance Sarajevo’s tram network transformation
The Canton of Sarajevo awarded the contract for the analysis of alternatives and preliminary design for the modernization of the Remiza tram depot to the consortium led by IDOM and the local engineering firm PPG. This project is part of the city’s strategy to modernize its public transportation system. It will enable the renovation of essential infrastructure for operating and maintaining the tram network.
The project will adapt the operations, parking, and maintenance facilities to accommodate the current and future tram fleet. To this end, the work will include assessing the existing facilities, defining operational requirements, analyzing various modernization alternatives, and developing the technical documentation necessary for the future construction bid.
One of the project’s main challenges will be defining a renovation strategy that ensures the continuity of the tram service while future work is being carried out. The design will incorporate energy efficiency, climate resilience, safety, and sustainability criteria, which will contribute to improving the infrastructure and ensuring its long-term operation.
The project also includes an urban regeneration component, integrating new pedestrian and bicycle spaces along the Miljacka River and enhancing their connection to nearby public spaces and active mobility routes.
IDOM and PPG’s collaboration combines international expertise in rail system and maintenance facility design with in-depth knowledge of the local context, enabling the development of a solution tailored to Sarajevo’s operational and strategic needs.
The project is funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the High Impact Climate Action Partnership (HIPCA) program. Through this project, IDOM will contribute to the expansion of Sarajevo’s tram network and the modernization of the infrastructure that enables its operation and maintenance, promoting more efficient, resilient, and sustainable urban mobility.
