Cartagena reimagines Bazurto in its new Master Plan
The Bazurto Market, one of the main supply centers and commercial hubs in Cartagena de Indias, is set to undergo a comprehensive transformation. IDOM has begun formulating the master plan that will guide its relocation and revitalization. The plan aims to improve operations, integrate the market into the surrounding urban area, and enhance its cultural, tourist, and economic value.
This plan addresses the need for land use planning and is part of a broader vision to enhance the Bazurto area’s heritage, tourism, culture, and gastronomy. At a time when many Latin American cities are struggling to balance growth with cultural preservation, Bazurto offers a chance to show that development and tradition can coexist.
The consultancy services provided are divided into five phases:
- Work plan: structuring the schedule, defining key players, and territorial recognition.
- Strategic diagnosis: multiscale analysis of the urban context and market dynamics.
- Relocation proposal for the New Market: evaluation of possible locations and formulation of a strategic proposal for the relocation of the Bazurto Market.
- Conceptual master plan for the existing market: guidelines for the revitalization of the current market environment as a tourist and cultural hub.
- Roadmap and implementation: action plan, development strategy, management and financing mechanisms to make the proposals viable.
This project is a commitment to reimagine Bazurto as a space that celebrates Cartagena’s diversity, promotes responsible tourism, and strengthens the local economy. It is a firm step toward a city that is transforming itself without forgetting who it is.
