Batán Park

Spain

Batán Park, designed by IDOM, is a landscape intervention of high environmental sensitivity, located within the Southeast Regional Park and forming part of the Natura 2000 Network. This new green space is envisioned as a meeting point between nature, culture, and community—created for the enjoyment of the residents of San Fernando de Henares and the wider Madrid region, offering a peaceful and inclusive environment for all generations.

The design is guided by a clear principle: to integrate the park into its natural surroundings while minimizing its impact on biodiversity, ecosystems, and the landscape. To achieve this, an ecological restoration strategy has been implemented, enhancing the site’s existing environmental values. The large wild meadow, which reaches its peak beauty in spring, will be preserved and reinforced to evolve sustainably into a mixed riparian and dehesa woodland ecosystem, supporting native flora and fauna.

Batán Park is conceived as a multifunctional space that blends leisure, sport, and culture. It includes outdoor sports areas, fitness circuits, water play zones, and a wide range of children’s facilities such as zip lines, slides, and climbing structures. The park also embraces a cultural dimension, with designated areas for concerts, talks, and educational activities in a natural setting, encouraging community participation and creative expression.

A key element of the project is its educational focus and connection to local heritage. Through interpretive trails, visitors can explore the natural and historical richness of the area, fostering a deeper and more respectful relationship with the environment and its conservation.

The transformation of a former dairy farm into a vibrant, accessible, and resilient green space exemplifies a new model of urban park. Batán Park not only enhances the quality of public space but also strengthens the bond between city and nature. It offers a contemporary vision of landscape architecture that responds to today’s environmental and social challenges, creating a space for reflection, recreation, and community engagement.
