Current Turbines Mobile Test Vessel (MTV)

USA

IDOM has finalized the advanced basic design of the MTV. The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under grant DE-EE0009452 of FOA-0002234, in collaboration with Florida Atlantic University’s Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC).

“The MTV design allows for the connection and testing of various types of tidal turbines, including marine and river types, as well as floating, bottom-mounted, and towed types, up to 8 meters in diameter.”

The MTV is a testing platform for turbines that extract energy from water currents, such as ocean, tidal, or river currents. It responds to developers’ growing need for facilities that allow them to easily and flexibly test their turbines in different locations and environmental conditions. The MTV can connect and test different types of turbines, including floating, bottom-mounted, and towed turbines, with diameters of up to 8 meters.

The main features of the MTV will include:

  • Ease of connection and operation.
  • Auxiliary systems for conducting tests: onboard power generation, communications, data acquisition, control, safety, etc.
  • Onboard network simulator.
  • Various mooring systems: connection to external mooring, complete onboard mooring, and jack-ups.

This last feature means that the MTV can be installed and operated in a wide variety of locations, including deep and shallow waters and rivers.
