Engineering support during the construction of Ascó Nuclear Power Plant

Spain

The Ascó Nuclear Power Plant, located in the region of Tarragona and operated by the Ascó-Vandellós II Nuclear Association (ANAV), is one of the most important nuclear installations in the Spanish energy system. It consists of two three-loop pressurised water reactor (PWR) units designed by Westinghouse, which, following their construction, began commercial operation of the nuclear power plant in 1983 (Unit I) and 1985 (Unit II). The Ascó Nuclear Power Plant Unit I, has a generating capacity of 1032 MW, while Unit II has a capacity of 1027 MW, making a significant contribution to the stability of the electricity supply in the region.

IDOM participated in this project by providing technical assistance services to the owner during the construction and commissioning phases. IDOM provided support to the owner’s engineering, project management and construction supervision in fields such as civil, electrical, mechanical and instrumentation and control (I&C) engineering. In addition, quality assurance, planning and cost control services were provided.

The PWR technology used at Ascó is one of the most widespread in the world due to its reliability and efficiency. It uses ordinary water as coolant, which simplifies operation and enhances safety. IDOM’s participation in this project consolidated its experience in the nuclear sector, especially in large-scale projects of high technical complexity.
