Preparation of the detailed engineering study for the construction of the biodigestion plant for the municipality of Xalapa

Mexico

The main objective of the project is the detailed design of the complete construction of the bio-digestion plant for 200 t/day (73,000 t/year) of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) to be installed on the premises of the MSW and Special Handling Waste (SMW) Integral Management Centre of the Municipality of Xalapa, Veracruz (Mexico). The project includes the preparation of a Technical Offer Annex for its construction and commissioning.

The plant process consists of three treatment phases:

  1. Mechanical pretreatment, including the reception and segregation of MSW, to obtain recyclables and/or recoverables, organic matter and rejects (the latter will be sent to the sanitary landfill located inside the MSW and MSW Integral Management Center of the Municipality of Xalapa).
    • Capacity of 200 t/d (73,000 t/year).
  2. Batch dry anaerobic digestion of organic matter and energy recovery of the biogas generated (635 kW).
    • Capacity of 60 t/d (21,900 t/year)
  3. Aerobic stabilization of the remaining digestate after anaerobic digestion for use as daily landfill cover.

IDOM developed the preliminary studies for the elaboration of the design, including soil mechanics, hydrology, hydrogeology and characterisation of the MSW at the entrance of the centre. On the basis of the documentation collected and the information generated, IDOM will also carry out a series of studies and documents that reflect the detailed engineering design of a mechanical-biological treatment plant for 200 tons/day (73,000 tons/year) of MSW for the three treatment phases that are the subject of this contract. Finally, a technical annex will be prepared for the purpose of contracting the company or companies that will carry out the construction and commissioning of the mechanical-biological treatment plant.
