Strengthening tourism management in protected natural areas (PNAs) in Peru
Peru
IDOM is working to improve the management of tourism in three protected natural areas (PNAs) in Peru. Financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and promoted by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas (SERNAP) and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR), this project aims to strengthen tourism management in these areas.
Areas of intervention
- 3 PNSs: Huascarán National Park, Tambopata National Reserve, and Grau Tropical Sea National Reserve
- 3 ecosystems: mountains, jungle, and sea
- 4 regions: Ancash, Madre de Dios, Piura, and Tumbes
Project objective
IDOM’s Climate Change team conducted technical tours and participatory workshops in three pilot Protected Natural Areas (PNAs) to identify gaps hindering the management of sustainable tourism projects aligned with the conservation of natural and cultural heritage.
The main challenge is promoting public-private investment by identifying anchor projects that respond to a replicable tourism model committed to sustainable biodiversity use, improved tourism service quality, and visitor satisfaction.
Significant actions in each PNA
- Mar Tropical de Grau: The project was presented to tour operators and municipal authorities. Despite its recent establishment, local stakeholders have demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing the challenges of conservation and sustainable tourism.
- Tambopata National Reserve: At the Malinowski Control Post, issues related to infrastructure, mining, and illegal logging were discussed. These issues threaten the development of tourism in this important Amazonian biodiversity refuge.
Huascarán National Park: At the iconic Laguna 69, MINCETUR, SERNANP, and IDOM representatives reflected on project management for mass and informal tourism. The goal is to guide visits towards a more sustainable and orderly model.
