Technical feasibility study for the project to modernise and manage solid waste on an inter-municipal basis and contract infrastructure with the private sector

Africa

The government of Côte d’Ivoire has developed waste management plans for different regions within the framework of the Urban Sanitation and Resilience Project (PARU).

The categories of solid waste covered by this study are:

  1. Domestic solid waste
  2. Sanitary waste
  3. Demolition and construction waste (CDW)
  4. Industrial waste from economic activities (markets, shops, hotels, restaurants, craftsmen, industries, etc.)
  5. Agricultural waste and residues.

IDOM participated in the preparation of the Technical Feasibility Study for inter-municipal waste management by evaluating and developing the technical and economic modalities for the establishment of an inter-municipal organisation for the management of solid waste produced in the communes of Toumodi, Yamoussoukro, Tiebissou, Djebonoua and Bouaké, in Ivory Coast, including the villages located between these localities.

The activities carried out were divided into five main missions.

  • Mission 1: Diagnosis of the solid waste management system in the cities in question.
  • Mission 2: Development of an operational plan for pre-collection, collection, transport/transfer, treatment and recovery of waste in the localities concerned.
  • Mission 3: Study of the construction of solid waste management infrastructure for collection points, transfer stations and composting plants. This mission also included some procedures for the closure of current waste management structures.
  • Mission 4: Organisation of the workshop for the restitution and validation of the study results.
  • Mission 5: Development of the conceptual design of the landfill cells and the infrastructure necessary for the implementation of the Recovery and Disposal Centre.
