Connection between Canada & USA

Canada | USA

As part of an overall end-to-end border transportation solution to improve the connection between Canada and the U.S. in the Windsor-Detroit area, Ontario is delivering the access road portion called the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway, an 11 km highway system stretching through Tecumseh, LaSalle and Windsor, and will lead to the Canadian inspection plaza and crossing.

To improve the connection between Canada and the United States

IDOM has participated in the geotechnical studies, temporary works and value engineering for the tunnel structures and installations, as well as the design of temporary diversion of both the traffic and services that have been affected by the works. The project includes 15 bridges, 11 tunnels, 3 gateways, 5.5 km of embankments and a complete drainage system with powerful pumping stations.

The city of Windsor (Ontario), in southern Canada, is a major commercial gateway between Canada and the United States, as it is located opposite the industrial city of Detroit (USA), on one of the banks of the river the same name. To improve the connection between Canada and the United States, the provincial government of Ontario launched the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway project (The Parkway).

This project, 11 km in length, includes a below-grade six-lane highway and a four-lane grade level highway, 11 tunnels, 15 bridges, 7 km of detour roads, and 20 km of green paths for pedestrians and cyclists along the cities of Windsor, LaSalle and Tecumseh.

In December 2010, the design, construction, finance and maintenance of the Parkway was awarded to the consortium ACS Infrastructure Canada Inc., Acciona Concessions Canada, and Fluor Canada Limited, with an estimated investment of 1,400 million Canadian dollars.Since December 2011, IDOM has been providing technical assistance to the consortium for geotechnical and value engineering in relation to the structures, tunnel installations, as well as the design of temporary detours. One of the main challenges is to ensure that the works have as little impact as possible on existing traffic.
