Power plant and services building at Cordoba airport

Spain

The Cordoba airport power plant project, developed by IDOM, marks the initial phase of the expansion process outlined in the airport’s Master Plan. This strategic initiative involved constructing a new power plant and an administrative building, both essential for ensuring the airport’s continuous operation during the planned construction of a new runway and terminal.

Surrounding an elliptical square with abundant vegetation

A key feature of this project is its architectural and landscape integration. Taking advantage of the airport’s modest scale, the new buildings are organized around an elliptical plaza adorned with mature vegetation, creating a pleasant and functional environment for users and staff. The site selected in the Master Plan enables the connection of the Cordoba airport power plant and the administrative building with other auxiliary elements, forming a stepped backdrop that will visually integrate with the future terminal.

Access to the administrative building, flight school, and cafeteria is centralized around an enclosed courtyard, which enhances natural lighting and provides a bright atmosphere, contrasted by the shaded entrance canopy. From the main lobby, located in the eastern corner, access to both the interior and the airside is controlled, even during nighttime hours. The flight school classrooms are designed as an independent unit, facing east and shielded from the sun by being set back within the volume, ensuring thermal and visual comfort. The Cordoba airport power plant project stands out for its focus on efficiency, landscape integration, and functionality, contributing to the modernization of Cordoba’s airport infrastructure.
