Individual Plant Examinations for External Events (IPEEE) at Spanish NPPs

Spain

This work is part of the severe accident policy implemented by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and incorporated into the Spanish nuclear power plants by the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN). At the request of the CSN, the Trillo, Ascó, Vandellós II and Cofrentes nuclear power plants carried out studies on vulnerability to severe accidents caused by external events (IPEEE). The reference standard, NUREG-1407, requires consideration of at least five types of events: earthquakes, fires inside the plant, strong winds, external flooding and accidents at nearby facilities or related to transportation routes . In addition, it should be confirmed that other plant-specific events that could influence the vulnerability of the plant to severe accidents are not excluded from the IPEEE.

In a global context where global warming is producing meteorological events that may be more severe, such as extreme temperatures, intense rainfall, extreme drought or even phenomena such as tornadoes, analyses of this type of events become especially relevant, with the aim of ensuring the robustness of the plants and their capacity to deal with this type of events, guaranteeing their safe operation at all times.

These studies are carried out periodically and are included in the risk analyses carried out by the plants.

IDOM has performed vulnerability analyses of all types.
