Knowledge management at the Joint Research Centre

We started working with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) in 2021, but since August 2024 in IDOM Nuclear Services we have been working on a framework contract to provide consultancy and engineering services in knowledge management.

Under this agreement, the JRC will award specific contracts for the development of its knowledge management activities applied to decommissioning and dismantling of existing nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities, and radioactive waste management. In fact, these activities respond to the JRC mandates in knowledge management: sharing the knowledge gained during the execution of its own Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste management Programme, and supporting other stakeholders like Ignalina (Lithuania), Bohunice V1 (Slovakia) and Kozloduy U1-U4 (Bulgaria) nuclear power reactors. As the lead agency of the initiative, the JRC has the responsibility to facilitate the dissemination of this knowledge and to promote a collaborative environment that fosters interaction between the different actors involved in the Member States.

The IDOM team involved in this project will be responsible for managing and developing the knowledge products published on the initiative’s platform, as well as advising the JRC on the management of internal knowledge and the organization of training and cooperation activities with international organizations. The ultimate goal of this framework contract is to design a European platform for centralizing and sharing this knowledge, and to promote initiatives that encourage interaction between the various stakeholders and facilitate their exchange.

Currently, the team led by Pierfederico Briani is distributed in several European locations, including Madrid, Bilbao, Barcelona, United Kingdom and Italy. In particular, our colleague Luis Felipe Durán, as project manager, has been working for the last two years at the JRC offices in Ispra, working closely with the client. Specifically, our technical experts in decommissioning and dismantling and radioactive waste management will also contribute with their knowledge to this project as part of the working team.

In addition to the technical and strategic impact of the project, this collaboration strengthens IDOM‘s visibility within the European Commission and among the main players in the sector in the Union. Thus, it is also an important step in consolidating our presence in Italy, opening up new business opportunities for IDOM. This project will undoubtedly allow the growth of the organization and place us in a strategic position within the European ecosystem of knowledge management in nuclear decommissioning.

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the European Commission’s scientific and knowledge-based service. Its main objective is to provide independent scientific advice and support to European Union (EU) policy-making.

Although it was originally set up under the Euratom Treaty to carry out nuclear research, over time it has extended its activities to other areas such as agriculture, food safety, energy, transport, environment, climate change, health, consumer protection, information society, innovation and growth.

It has a long history in nuclear research and within this field its activities cover nuclear safety and security, innovative nuclear systems, nuclear policy support and nuclear knowledge management.

Within the latter, the JRC manages and preserves nuclear knowledge, ensuring that information and expertise in this field is properly maintained and transferred. And it is here that the tasks developed by IDOM within the framework contract are included.
