We win the international competition to design the Illunbe arena with a proposal that drives a new urban hub in San Sebastián

IDOM has been awarded the international competition for the new multi-purpose Illunbe arena in San Sebastián with its proposal Txalaparta, a project that conceives this site as a new urban, sporting and cultural hub, fully integrated into the city.

The proposal goes beyond the creation of a single facility, promoting an intervention capable of activating its surroundings, generating new public spaces and strengthening the relationship between architecture, landscape and activity. The jury particularly valued its response to the functional brief, architectural quality, environmental performance and technical and economic viability, as well as its ability to improve urban integration through a more efficient use of the site.

The project is organised around two arenas, one multi-purpose and one dedicated to sport, which can operate independently or together, broadening their range of uses and enabling everything from concerts and competitions to smaller-scale events.

One of its most significant features is the creation of a new sports-cultural boulevard, which will structure arrivals and connect the city, landscape and activity, generating a more accessible, legible and active public realm.

The proposal also incorporates sustainability criteria through the preservation of more than 10,000 m² of the existing structure, significantly reducing carbon footprint, construction time and costs.
