Connolly and Spencer Dock stations in Dublin
Ireland
DART+ West, developed by IDOM for Iarnród Éireann/Irish Rail, is a major Irish Government initiative to enhance the public transport network by increasing service frequency and replacing diesel trains with high-capacity electrified DART services. The project includes the transformation of the existing rail corridor between Dublin city centre and Maynooth, encompassing the refurbishment of Connolly Station and the construction of a new station at Spencer Dock.
Connolly Station
Originally built in the mid-19th century, Connolly Station is Ireland’s busiest railway station. The project introduces a new entrance from Preston Street, which will be pedestrianised to improve accessibility and safety. The new façade, defined by illuminated vertical metal elements, will create a distinctive gateway to the station. A vaulted entrance hall will lead into a transverse concourse, connecting with stairs and lifts to the platforms and creating a significantly enlarged passenger hall.
Spencer Dock Station
The new Spencer Dock Station has been designed to deliver a high-quality passenger experience based on two key principles: encouraging seamless interchange with other modes of transport and providing a direct, intuitive connection between the city and the railway platforms. Integration with the nearby Luas tram stop will be central to the design, complemented by a new bicycle parking facility and direct access to Sheriff Street Bridge, where bus stops, taxi ranks and private vehicle drop-off points will be located. The main entrance, a large opening facing Spencer Dock Square, will become a new gateway both to the DART+ network and to the city of Dublin itself.
Beyond improving the sustainability and reliability of Dublin’s public transport system, the project will transform the passenger experience while strengthening the urban integration of these key transport hubs.
