Naples Metro stations

Italy

A new metro line, known as the LAN (Afragola–Naples Line), will connect the Afragola High-Speed Rail Station and Naples-Capodichino Airport with the centre of Naples.

This major infrastructure project, extending over more than 12 kilometres, will significantly improve mobility across the region, reducing journey times between Naples and the surrounding province and enhancing the quality of life for local communities.

The new line is expected to carry around 150,000 passengers per day, providing a high level of comfort and accessibility. Nearly 40,000 people will be within a ten-minute walk of a station. In addition, the scheme will save approximately 17 million litres of fuel annually and prevent the emission of more than 36,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year.

By strengthening regional connectivity, delivering substantial environmental benefits and incorporating state-of-the-art technology, the project will contribute to the enhancement of public spaces and the quality of Naples’ urban environment.

The architectural design of the stations draws inspiration from one of the most iconic symbols of Neapolitan culture: Mount Vesuvius. The concept seeks to provide a distinctly local response, embedding the genius loci—the unique spirit of the place—into the everyday experience of those who will use the new metro line.

The interior spaces have been conceived as an interpretation of the inside of a volcanic cone. As passengers descend through the station shafts, the spaces gradually widen, reducing the sense of confinement that can often accompany travel deep below ground, where the LAN line runs.

The central void of each shaft has been kept entirely free of structural elements, creating an open and generous space that allows daylight to penetrate down to mezzanine level. In a striking inversion of the natural behaviour of a volcano, light is drawn into its interior, as though erupting downwards through the heart of the station.
