IDOM will design the extension of the Sarajevo tram network to Dobrinja and the international airport
The Canton of Sarajevo awarded IDOM a contract to design the preliminary plans and prepare the technical bidding documents for extending the tram network from Nedžarići to Dobrinja. This project will include a branch line connecting to Sarajevo International Airport. This project is part of the canton’s strategy to expand and modernize its public transportation network, improve urban connectivity, and transition to a more sustainable mobility model.
The Government of Spain is supporting the project through FIEM funding, an instrument designed to promote the internationalization of Spanish companies and the development of technical studies for projects of strategic interest. This contribution strengthens institutional cooperation between Spain and Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighting the expertise of Spanish engineering firms in sustainable urban transportation infrastructure.
The future extension will better connect Sarajevo’s residential areas with the existing tram network and the airport, facilitating more efficient travel and reducing dependence on private vehicles. The project aligns with the Canton of Sarajevo’s territorial planning objectives, which promote expanding passenger rail services and improving urban connections within the metropolitan area.
IDOM’s work is divided into three phases: an initial stage involving reviewing and updating previous studies, analyzing demand, and conducting topographic and geotechnical work; a second phase focused on developing the preliminary design; and a third phase providing technical support during preparing the future tender. This work will provide the Canton with a solid technical foundation to move forward with contracting and constructing the infrastructure.
The project is part of a broader investment context in sustainable public transportation in Sarajevo. In recent years, this investment has driven the modernization of the tram network, the introduction of new rolling stock, and new urban mobility initiatives. Through this extension, the Canton aims to improve the quality of life for its citizens, reduce congestion, and promote more efficient, environmentally friendly electric mobility.
For IDOM, this project is a new opportunity to contribute its international expertise in planning and designing urban rail infrastructure. IDOM will support the Canton of Sarajevo in transforming a strategic mobility priority into a project that is technically ready for future bidding and implementation.
