Case study: BIM Standardization in Project Management

As part of a series of initiatives arising from the Autodesk and IDOM collaboration process, “IS05 BIM Standardization” was born, an initiative specifically designed for the Water Technical Area and developed in close collaboration between the Water BIM team, supported by the Transversal Infrastructure BIM team and the Autodesk team.

Recognized for its innovative approach, the Water TA faced a major challenge: managing a large number of major projects using the BIM methodology, which meant breaking with the usual procedures and workflows. In the search for consistency and efficiency, it was proposed to standardize the processes in order to achieve the best possible results in the projects.

Using our experience with Autodesk BIM modeling software as a foundation, we developed a roadmap for standardization. Through immersive workshops, meetings, and presentations, we analyzed our BIM processes in detail. This allowed Autodesk to identify areas for improvement and propose customized workflows for Revit and Civil3D to ensure seamless integration and data validation.

The synergy between the two teams paid off, catalyzing a paradigm shift in BIM model management and execution. Today, IDOM’s Water Technical Area has developed documentation that describes standardized workflows, templates, libraries, and nomenclature applicable to all projects and any BIM software.

The impact of this collaboration has been significant. It has significantly reduced the time spent on initial model preparation and design, as well as subsequent revisions and quality control. This has positioned the Water Technical Area as a reference within IDOM.

The partnership and cooperation between the two teams exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation to drive efficiency and standardization. By strategically combining experience and technology, the Water Technical Area has not only optimized its workflows, but also strengthened its capacity for future growth and adaptation.
