How BIM automation enabled the management of more than 800 models in the Fehmarnbelt tunnel
Large infrastructure projects today face many challenges, including managing hundreds of digital models, reducing repetitive tasks, and improving team efficiency. During her presentation at BIMFRA 2026, our colleague Laura de la Iglesia shared her insights on this very topic.
Considered one of the leading gatherings in Spain’s BIM sector, the event brought together representatives from engineering firms, construction companies, public administrations, and infrastructure digitization specialists to exchange experiences and learn about the latest industry trends.
During her presentation, titled “BIM Automation with Dynamo and Python: Reducing Modeling Times and Managing 800 Models for the Fehmarnbelt Undersea Tunnel,” Laura explained how automation tools optimized BIM management for one of Europe’s most significant infrastructure projects, in which IDOM participated in designing the MEP systems.
Her presentation demonstrated how Dynamo and Python transformed manual processes into automated workflows, achieving time savings of up to 80% on certain modeling tasks and facilitating the coordinated management of over 800 BIM models. These solutions not only improve efficiency but also enhance the quality of the models and the consistency of the generated information.
IDOM’s participation in BIMFRA 2026 enabled us to share real-world experiences from large international projects with other industry professionals and showcase our teams’ efforts to promote digitalization and the continuous improvement of engineering processes.
