IDOM and Elian move toward a safer, more efficient plant through an international SWIFT Workshop
A Structured What-If Technique (SWIFT) workshop was held at Elian’s Barcelona facilities in July. SWIFT is one of the most internationally recognized methodologies for identifying and assessing process risks at industrial facilities. The event brought together Elian and IDOM specialists, as well as Crown and external process safety consultants, to jointly analyze various operational scenarios for the future soy protein concentrate plant.
The main objective of this exercise is to review the facility’s design from a safety perspective. This involves systematically identifying potential operational deviations, process-related risks, the need for separation between buildings, and potential impacts on people, assets, and operational continuity. This review is being conducted at a pivotal stage of the project, aligning with the advancement of engineering work and the commencement of construction activities.
The workshop brings together multidisciplinary experts from various fields of engineering, operations, and industrial safety. This allows for the comparison of different perspectives and reinforces the soundness of the design decisions made thus far. During the sessions, the main buildings and processes of the plant are reviewed. Various operational and emergency scenarios are evaluated to ensure that the planned solutions meet the highest international safety standards.
For Elian, this type of analysis is a critical part of its commitment to operational excellence and constructing a cutting-edge facility for producing soy protein concentrate in Europe. The SWIFT study will allow for the early incorporation of recommendations that optimize the design and reduce risks during the plant’s future operation.
