Learning about Ecohydrology in Chongqing, China

Jose A. Gaona, an expert of the IDOM Natural Capital team, represented Colombia at the International Ecohydrology Frontiers Workshop, which took place in Chongqing (China) from September 4 to 22.

The workshop, organized by the Chongqing Institute of Green and Smart Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme of UNESCO, consisted of 11 lectures and two field trips on the Yangtze River, during which knowledge on ecohydrology was transmitted.

Some key concepts shared by our colleague:

  • Sustainable economics: We learned about the need for ecohydrology to be economically viable, ensuring its sustainability and preservation of ecosystem services. This vision aligns with our philosophy of combining economic viability with ecological solutions in our projects.
  • Nature-based solutions: We observed first-hand how nature-based innovations, especially along the Yangtze River, can transform the urban and rural landscape, helping to mitigate challenges such as floods and droughts.
  • Global integration: Discussions at the workshop reaffirmed the importance of having an integrated approach. The alignment of ecohydrology with the WEFE nexus (Water; Energy; Food; Ecosystems) is a clear example of how diverse elements can be combined to achieve sustainable development.
  • Ancestral knowledge: One of the most enriching aspects was the discussion on the integration of ancestral knowledge in ecohydrology. This perspective reinforces our belief in the importance of considering local traditions and wisdoms in any sustainable project.
  • Cross-sectoral collaboration: The relevance of the “pentahelix” stakeholders (academia, industry, government, media, communities) highlights the importance of holistic collaboration in the design and implementation of solutions in the field of natural capital.

These learnings are valuable for IDOM and reinforce our position as a leader in the field of Natural Capital and Bioeconomy. Our active participation in global events such as this one puts us in a unique position to assume a pioneering role in the adoption and implementation of ecohydrological solutions worldwide.
