Integrated Urban Mobility Plan and BRT in Aguascalientes, Mexico

Mexico

The Metropolitan Area of Aguascalientes, composed of the municipalities of Aguascalientes, San Francisco de los Romo and Jesus Maria, has a population of 1 million inhabitants. It is an important node of economic activity related to the automotive industry, manufacturing and trade, among others. In this socio-economic context, the mobility of citizens in the metropolitan area and its connection to nearby towns is especially important.
The Government of the State of Aguascalientes entrusted IDOM with the development of the Integrated Urban Mobility Plan (PIMUS) for the Metropolitan Zone of Aguascalientes, as well as detailed projects for the implementation of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. This IDOM Integrated Urban Mobility Plan BRT Aguascalientes service includes 9 main corridors covering 25 km, 26 auxiliary routes, 37 stations, 145 stops, 4 connection terminals, one microterminal, 15 km of bike lanes, park-and-ride facilities, and taxi stops.

Sustainable urban mobility for a population of 1 million inhabitants

The Government of the State of Aguascalientes has proposed the promotion of modes of transport that are compatible with economic growth, social cohesion and environmental protection. For this reason, it has awarded IDOM the contract to develop the Comprehensive Plan for Sustainable Urban Mobility in the Metropolitan Zone of the City of Aguascalientes and the detailed design of a BRT.

The transport system consists of 9 key corridors of 25 km, with 26 auxiliary routes, and will have 37 stations, 145 stops, 4 connecting terminals and a microterminal. Also planned are 15 km of bicycle lanes, park-and-ride lots and cab ranks. Electronic payment, passenger information systems (PIS) and a control center will be provided. In addition, 168 new low-floor units and the main sidings and workshops for their maintenance are being considered.

The work culminated with the preparation of the Executive Project for the first phase of the implementation of the Aguascalientes Integrated Metropolitan Transportation System, which will turn the Aguascalientes Metropolitan Area into a national benchmark for sustainable mobility.
