Composite bioshield for Deuterium-Tritium operations

UK

As part of the STEP programme, the UKAEA asked IDOM to provide a proposal for the configuration and construction of a modular multi-layer primary bioshield, taking into account the requirements for cost-effectiveness and benefits in terms of construction, decommissioning and waste management.

The conceptual design is based on a Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) construction system, which has clear advantages in terms of mechanical strength, nuclear irradiation activation and cost effectiveness. A detailed analysis of design characteristics such as bond strength, variation geometry analysis, lifting characteristics, structural analysis, service penetrations, air tightness, fire resistance and radiation degradation has been carried out.

The results have been reported in a patent application.
