Composite bioshield for Deuterium-Tritium operation

UK

Within the STEP Programme, the UKAEA requested IDOM to present a proposal for configuring and constructing a modular multi-layer primary bioshield, taking into account the requirements of cost-effectiveness and advantages in terms of construction, decommissioning, and waste management.

The conceptual design is based on a construction system using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP), which presents clear advantages in terms of mechanical strength, nuclear irradiation activation, and cost-effectiveness. A detailed analysis was performed of design characteristics such as bond strength, variation geometry analysis, lifting features, structural analysis, service penetration ports, airtightness, fire resistance and radiation deterioration.

The results have been filed in a patent application.
