ECM – Reline of Blast Furnace No.1 in Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico – ArcelorMittal
Mexico
ArcelorMittal undertook in 2017 a series of improvement and modernization projects for its steel production plant in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, north of Ixtapa, in Mexico. Among them, the reline of the blast furnace No. 1, with a capacity of around 1.6 million tons per year.
ArcelorMittal has relied once again on IDOM to carry out the project, hiring the services of ECM (Engineering and Construction Management). The scope of our services can be divided into 2 phases:
- Engineering review and purchase management assistance: July 2017 to July 2018.
- Construction management during construction: July 2018 to February 2019.
The main suppliers that have participated in the project are Primetals Technologies (cooling system) and Paul Wurth (Bell Less Top® charging system).
Taking into account that a reline requires the total shutdown of the blast furnace, one of the great challenges has been the achievement of the deadlines established in a very demanding initial planning, always considering the economic impact that each day of delay could entail. In addition to the specific support of specialists in the offices, IDOM has arranged 2 important teams of professionals present in the ArcelorMittal plant itself, adjusted to the needs of each phase and composed of 15 and 42 people respectively.
