FEL-3 Detailed Feasibility Study (DFS) for ALVANCE

UK

ALVANCE British Aluminium (ALVANCE) is investing in expanding their smelter in order to obtain higher value-added products through the development of an aluminium recycling & billet manufacturing plant, using both the liquid aluminium generated in the current smelter and aluminium scrap sourced from the national and international market as raw materials.

ALVANCE currently produces primary liquid aluminium from imported alumina (aluminium oxide), which is transformed into pure aluminium in the electrolytic cells of the Smelter. This process requires a large amount of electricity, which ALVANCE obtains from a sustainable source, their own hydroelectric power plant located adjacent to the smelter near Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, in the Scottish Highlands. This renewable energy source already sets Lochaber apart as one of the greenest Aluminium producers in the world and the introduction of recycled material will further drive down it’s carbon footprint per tonne of metal produced.

The project which will have a capacity of 100,000 tons per year, includes a new process building, melting & holding furnaces, vertical casting, and heat treatment furnace. The product is 6000 series aluminium billet of multiple diameters, mainly intended for the construction and transport market.

IDOM is collaborating with ALVANCE in the development of the project in its FEL-3 detailed feasibility study phase, including scrap market studies, equipment specifications, basic engineering, OPEX and CAPEX estimation, financial study, etc.
