New public-owned textile waste sorting plant in Galicia

Law 7/2022, of April 8, on Waste and Contaminated Soils for a Circular Economy, establishes the obligation of selective collection of new waste fractions, including textile waste. As a result, a significant increase in the amount of separately collected textile waste is expected.

In this context, the Sociedad Galega de Medio Ambiente (SOGAMA), an entity of the Department of Environment and Climate Change of the Xunta de Galicia, has identified the need to develop new infrastructure in its environmental complex in Cerceda. This initiative is also in line with the objectives of SOGAMA’s Strategic Plan 2025-2030.

IDOM participation in the project

As part of the technical assistance provided to SOGAMA, IDOM has been responsible for drawing up the technical project and the documentation required for the application for permits. It has also participated in the preparation of the technical specifications for the construction and management of the first public textile waste sorting plant in Galicia.

This plant will be located in the Sogama Environmental Complex in Cerceda (A Coruña) and will have an initial treatment capacity of 3,000 tons per year, expandable to a maximum of 24,000 tons.

Main features of the project

  • Input flexibility: The plant is designed to adapt to different types of textile waste. It will be able to receive materials from municipal selective collection containers, social enterprises or even from the textile industry.
  • Output flexibility: The facility will first classify reusable waste, which can be reintroduced into the textile cycle. Non-reusable waste will be separated according to composition and color and sent for mechanical or chemical recycling, as appropriate. Non-textile rejects will also be identified for energy recovery or other treatment.
  • Modularity: The design foresees different growth phases. The plant will start with a capacity of 3,000 tons/year, expandable up to 24,000 tons/year..
  • Advanced automation: The system will have a high level of automation, especially in complex processes such as the removal of unwanted elements (zippers, buttons, etc.).
  • Boosting the Galician textile cluster: This plant is part of the Galician Government’s Strategic Plan for the development of a textile HUB in Galicia..
