From 2006 until its completion in 2014, IDOM played a major role in the design and construction of San Mamés Barria, a UEFA five star stadium for 53,000 spectators located in the centre of Bilbao. Among other responsibilities, IDOM was assigned the architectural, structural and M&E installations designs, as well as the project management and budgeting control.
IDOM ADA, leading the structural design of the stadium, developed an innovative structural solution based on two clearly differentiated structural elements: a structure based on composite portal frames to cope with a perimeter overhang of 7m, and a 50m cantilever roof structure. The Stadium was built in two phases to enable the operation of the Old Stadium during Construction.

IDOM ADA was responsible for the structural design of the stadium, San Mamés Barria, which is a UEFA five star stadium capable of accommodating about ,3.000 spectators. This new stadium, located in the centre of Bilbao, is composed of three grandstands, four floors, ground floor and three basementss, with a height from ground level of 37 m and a total height of 49 m.
San Mamés Barria stadium is formed by two clearly differentiated structural elements: the portal frames structure, made of reinforced concrete, and the roof steel structure, which is a 50 m cantilever structure supported by the concrete portal frames. Due to the difference between the inner lower ground envelope and outer upper envelopes of the stadium there is an overhang along the perimeter of approx. 7 m. This overhang, together with the considerable span of the roof steel structure, has required innovative structural solutions based on portal frames of composite sections.
Given the requirement to continue play uninterruptedly in the old stadium, and the fact that part of the footprint of the new stadium was going to overlap it, IDOM proposed a challenging phased construction process that enabled the operation of the old stadium during construction and allowed play to be transferred from the old to the new stadium within three months.
Following two years of construction in the first phase of the stadium project, at the end of the 2012-13 season the old stadium was demolished and play was resumed in the new stadium for the 2012-13 season. At no stage was play interrupted until its completion by the beginning of the 2014-15 season.
