CEIBS Campus
People's Republic of China
CEIBS (China Europe International Business School) is the leading business school in Asia. As part of its expansion, CEIBS decided to build a new CEIBS campus in Beijing for which it hired IDOM as Design Architect. The building of the new campus occupies about 19 000 m2 constructed in a first floor + 2 + basement building on a 33100 m2 plot within the Zhong Guan Cun Science Park on the outskirts of Beijing.
The services performed by IDOM were those of Design Architect based on the American Institute of Architects model. IDOM was responsible for all aspects of design and construction, assisting and validating the development of the local engineering works.
The CEIBS Campus project in Beijing is fundamentally conditioned by its teaching function, the planning of the Zhong Guan Cun Science Park, which proposes a series of buildings scattered in a forest, as if they were islands in the middle of the ocean, and finally by the client’s need to undertake the project in two phases, without, of course, being perceived as unfinished at the end of the first phase.
The project, in its first phase, morphologically consists of a basement, the most public area, which is presented as two streets that flank the classroom spaces and five bodies of uses that provide service and counterpoint from a formal point of view.
Traditional Chinese architecture as well as its philosophy and culture, which fascinated us even before this opportunity, was the internal driving force that shaped the project of the CEIBS campus in Beijing, being recognizable both in the choice of forms and materials, and above all, in the interior spatial configuration, where it is easy to recognize concrete references. Thus the building gives shape to the spirit of the school itself as a meeting point between Europe and China.
In it we can perceive the concept of dynamic balance that expresses the yin and yang, present in Chinese architecture thanks to feng shui, in this case, interpreted from our Western training.
