MetroLink, the first metro line in Dublin
Ireland
IDOM is responsible for the engineering services for MetroLink, Dublin’s new high-frequency 26 km rail line. In competition with other leading firms, IDOM was awarded the contract for this ambitious project, which will be delivered in five stages over the next ten years, from preliminary design to commissioning. The decision by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the National Transport Authority (NTA) to select IDOM for MetroLink was based on IDOM’s extensive international experience and the proven capability of its design teams.
Urban transport 4.0
MetroLink is designed to meet the needs of Dublin’s society. The project involves comprehensive public consultations with all stakeholders, including educational and health institutions, sports and business organisations, transport operators, and elected representatives. The client analyses all feedback to ensure that MetroLink’s route, construction, and operation serve the best interests of every user. This dynamic, inclusive approach strengthens our connection to the community and enriches the services we provide. IDOM is helping to develop an Urban Transport 4.0 system—consensual, accessible, efficient, environmentally friendly, and responsive to all social groups.
Jacobs is our partner in this significant challenge. IDOM is delivering the full scope of engineering for MetroLink, including the alignment, tunnels, viaducts, stations, railway systems, rolling stock, depots, and maintenance facilities, as well as operational studies. BIM Level 2 methodology is being used throughout the design process and across all disciplines.
MetroLink will be Dublin’s first metro line, connecting the north and south of the city over 26 km. The route links Swords, the airport, and the city centre—including a stop at the iconic O’Connell Street—with two connections to Irish Rail, before continuing south from Charlemont to Sandyford. The line features 25 stations and adapts to the urban landscape, running underground, at grade, elevated, or in open sections as required. On the southern section, the existing Luas tramway will be upgraded to Metro automatic standard (GoA 4), which will be applied to the operation of the entire MetroLink system.
An interactive route map and the Preferred Route document are now available on the MetroLink website.
