Geotechnical works

Practical cases - Unique projects

On June 10, the 53rd edition of “Works of geotechnical interest” was organized in Madrid, by SEMSIG (Spanish Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering). The invited firm was IDOM.

During the event, the professionals from IDOM presented several practical cases about unique works, their respective difficulties and challenges, and the diversity of constructive solutions that were studied and applied. The topics covered in the three presentations were:

  • Practical cases of preload settings/calculations in industrial works, with an example of preloading of the foundations for grain silos in Algeria and another of preloading in an industrial plant in Bangladesh.
  • Geotechnical model for line 3 of the Riyadh Metro. This is a unique work of analysis, partly because of its magnitude (41 km), and partly because of the various problems such as karst and, surprisingly in Saudi Arabia, inconveniences due to the shallow water table.
  • Technical assistance for the New Lock in the port of Seville. An atypical work, conditioned by not interrupting operational river traffic during its construction, and where it was necessary to adopt some special solutions for closing docks.

The event was held at the facilities of CETA (Centre for Studies of Applied Techniques), one of the centres attached to CEDEX (the Centre for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works).
