Al Layyah Combined Cycle (1,026 MW): Engineering and expansion at Sharjah’s power complex
United Arab Emirates
The Al Layyah Combined Cycle, with a capacity of 1,026 MW, is a strategic expansion within the Layyah power complex in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Promoted by SEWA and constructed by the Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and Elsewedy Electric consortium under an EPC contract, this project integrates advanced combined cycle technology, including MHPS MHI 701F gas turbines, heat recovery boilers, and seawater condensation systems. Elsewedy Electric entrusted IDOM with the basic and detailed engineering, covering mechanical, civil, piping, and on-site technical support, consolidating technical excellence in the Al Layyah Combined Cycle project.
The plant has a 2x2x1 multi-axis configuration, and its technology is based on the MHPS MHI 701F natural gas turbine model and its generator, two bypass chimneys, two recovery boilers, and a condensation steam turbine using seawater (once through) complete the main equipment. The project also includes all complementary auxiliary services and their integration with existing plants. The combined cycle plant exports steam to existing plants.
Elsewedy Electric has contracted IDOM to develop the basic engineering and mechanical-process detail of the project, the civil detailed engineering of the main buildings and equipment (gas turbine facility, steam turbine facility, gas turbine pedestal, pipe rack foundation diverter, HRSG foundation and slabs and foundations in the gas and steam turbine facilities), the piping engineering of the main systems (steam, feedwater, circulation, fuel gas, fuel oil, etc.) and technical support for Electrical and I&C disciplines. The services provided also involved technical personnel IDOM on site to support the client during the construction and commissioning of the plant.
