BTEK Technology Appreciation Centre
Spain
The BTEK Technology Appreciation Centre, located in the Bizkaia Technology Park in Derio, is a technology interpretation center designed as an educational and outreach space, particularly aimed at students, young innovators, and the general public interested in science and technology. Designed by IDOM, the building integrates uniquely into the landscape through two seemingly separate pyramidal volumes that stand as a striking and symbolic visual landmark in the area.
The first volume, black in color, emerges from the ground with a strong, grounded presence. Its closed and heavy composition is reinforced by three metallic façades, while its roof is covered by a continuous grid of solar panels, symbolizing its commitment to clean and renewable energy sources. This commitment extends throughout the building, which features a geothermal installation, sustainable construction materials, and exhibition content focused on technological innovation, environmental responsibility, and energy efficiency, all aligned with global sustainability goals.
In contrast, the second volume is visually lighter, defined by two curtain wall façades and a green roof that extends naturally from the surrounding terrain, blending seamlessly with the landscape and enhancing the building’s integration with nature. Both volumes are connected underground, creating a fluid and harmonious transition between architecture and environment, while preserving the visual purity of the exterior.
Access to the building is through the black volume, at the fold of a corner that reveals a descending ramp. As visitors move downward, a metallic overhang welcomes and guides them into the interior, where the reception area—known as “the throat”—rises 18 meters high, emphasizing verticality, openness, and spatial experience.
The exhibition program is distributed across three levels that follow the slope of the terrain, connected by ramps and staircases that enhance spatial continuity and accessibility. The BTEK Technology Appreciation Centre stands out not only for its innovative and sustainable architecture but also for its educational mission, offering a dynamic, interactive environment for scientific and technological dissemination, exploration, and long-term inspiration.
