Doppler Weather Radar Tower and Facilities
Spain
The Kapildui Rain Radar, 6 m diameter, uses high technology (Klystron) and is capable of detecting storms, rain and snow in a radius of 400 Km. Main issues in the design of its tower were the high stiffness requirements (max. lateral displ. of 0.1º at 250 km/h wind speed), and the control of the vibrations due to vortex shedding phenomena. Balconies, three continuous helical vanes and a tuned mass damper ensure a good dynamic performance. Transport limitations to access to the top of the mountain also conditioned significantly the design of the tower.
